Twelve in 2012-Update: How political events are shaping markets
Since publishing our research note, “Twelve in 2012: What politics could mean for markets in the year ahead,” last November, there have been a number of significant political events, including some surprises. This paper looks at how politics and policy are continuing to be a major market driver, specifically:
- The contours of the U.S. presidential election are becoming clearer, while Europe remains a source of local and global volatility
- Emerging Asia has seen good news (Taiwan) and new risk (North Korean handover)
- Political risk in a number of oil-producing countries is playing out largely as we expected; Brent crude was up nearly 5% just in January
